Oral exams are an essential part of ongoing dental care with a focus on prevention.  Taylor Made Smiles provides comprehensive oral exams as part of your regular visits twice a year. While all of our dental patients undergo a dental exam during their appointments, not all know the reasons behind them. During these exams, your overall and oral health is evaluated to track the progress of known concerns and identify any potential new ones. Find out what’s ahead for your next visit to our clinic in Franklin, TN.

The Importance Of Oral Exams At Taylor Made Smiles

An oral exam is a central part of your regular dental visits with us, especially if it’s your first visit. In addition to going over your oral health history, our hygienists will assess your overall oral health through these exams.  The resulting information fills out your medical chart and serves as a baseline for Dr. Burton to work from. During these exams some or all of the following will be involved, depending on need:

  • Cross-referencing medical and dental histories for important correlations
  • Recording of any teeth that are broken, chipped, decayed, or absent.
  • Recording of existing prosthetics, bridges, implants, crowns, fillings, and root canals.
  • Identification of any existing wear or damage on existing restoration work.
  • Checking for signs of mouth or throat cancer.
  • Identification of any abnormalities in the neck and lymph nodes.
  • Identification of proper alignment and positioning of your teeth
  • Checking for signs of bruxism or teeth grinding/clenching.
  • Assessment of your gums for signs of gingivitis or periodontal disease.
  • Imaging may be done to check for concerns not visible to the naked eye.
  • Photos will be taken of your teeth to observe changes over time.
  • Identification of changes needed in your oral hygiene practices.
  • Development of a plan for future dental work/repair if needed.
  • Determining if referrals to oral surgeons, periodontists, or orthodontists are needed.

Each of these steps comes together to create a comprehensive exam that helps identify and present oral disease before it happens. Once dental decay has set in there’s no way to reverse it, so it’s essential to stop it before it gets worse. Mouth and throat cancer are both relatively easy to treat, provided that they are caught early enough. These are just a few of the reasons why oral exams are an essential part of your visit to Taylor Made Smiles.
